Elan grew up with only his mother, a barmaid who sang to make the work easier, and grew up to be a good, simple person who enjoys singing to help other people. As a bard, he trained in recognizing dramatic tension and theatrics. He knows that the proper time to jump off an exploding mountain is right before the explosion gets to you and that sitting at a bar in a shadowy cloak is the best way to get help. His first job as a bard was as a herald to a mighty knight, and eventually he joined up with Roy and the rest of the Order of the Stick by advising them on how to recruit adventurers.

Physical appearance: Elan's physical appearance has been left fairly vague, as he is canonically a stick figure (although canon allows for jokes on being or not being a stick figure, so as far as milliways goes he's probably a normal human). He's 21 years old, good looking, has blond hair, and is unable to grow a beard (due to an awkward experience with his evil twin).

Elan has abilities appropriate for a ninth to tenth level D+D character, and is aware that he is a D+D character (as well as being aware of all his stats and skills). Most of his levels are in Bard with one in Dashing Swordsman, which allows him to add his charisma bonus to a rapier's damage as long as he makes a quip when he attacks. He has the ability to cast illusion spells, although they mostly are restricted to changes of his own appearance, illusions of women, or illusions of hordes of puppies. He also has magical abilities to escape from ropes. He has a very high Charisma, and is good with diplomacy, tumbling, and knows how to ride a horse. He has a puppet named Banjo. He uses his performance ability to inspire competence at every opportunity, even when it defeats the purpose of the attempted skill. He is not very bright, and being very trusting he's fairly easy to talk into believing silly things. He enjoys entertaining, though, and will often play along with practical jokes. He enjoys puns. He is predestined to have "a happy ending", although the middle is not guaranteed.

He normally has a pair of elvenkind boots, a chain shirt, a rapier, a kazoo, a lute, a belt of gender changing, and various other incidental items. Currently of the above he only has a +3 keen rapier available.
